Inspiring Graduation for Twins Born Weighing Less Than a Pound

Kimyah and DJ, the resilient twins born prematurely at the Cleveland Clinic, share an inspiring narrative of strength and triumph despite facing numerous challenges. Born just 11 months ago at 22 weeks, these tiny survivors, initially small enough to fit in an adult’s hand, have become a symbol of hope.

Upon their arrival, weighing 12 oz and 15 oz respectively, Kimyah and DJ were immediately placed in the fetal intensive care unit due to their fragile condition. With survival odds as low as 10% to 20%, their journey seemed daunting. Their mother, Kimberly Thomas, recalls the terrifying moment when she began leaking amniotic fluid, signaling a critical situation. Despite efforts to delay labor, the twins were born on October 12, 2022, at 22 weeks and one day.

The medical team expressed skepticism about their chances of surviving the first three days, emphasizing the challenges associated with their extreme prematurity. Kimyah, resembling the size of a soda can, and DJ faced additional obstacles in their early months, including a collapsed lung and a brain bleed.

Undeterred by the difficulties, the family, especially Kimberly, played an active role in the twins’ growth. Dr. Firas Saker, the medical director of the Cleveland Clinic Children’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), acknowledged the crucial part Kim played in helping the twins overcome their challenges.

Despite the uphill battle, the family maintained a positive outlook, celebrating every small achievement. After spending 138 days in the NICU, Kimyah and DJ, officially recognized as the youngest surviving premature twins born at the Cleveland Clinic, were deemed strong enough to go home on February 27.

In a touching ceremony, the hospital staff organized a graduation-style celebration, complete with a special photo session. Wearing adorable pink and blue caps and gowns, the family received cheers from the staff lining the hallways as they left the hospital.

Expressing heartfelt gratitude, Kimberly thanked all those who provided unwavering support, including doctors and nurses. Kimyah and DJ, now thriving and full of energy, serve as a living testament to the resilience of life and the power of maintaining a positive focus amidst adversity.
